About this Video:
The first key to individual defense is to get into a good defensive stance. The Stance and Slides drill teaches how to get into a good stance and how to move correctly. This mass drill, one that involves the entire team, incorporates fundamental on-ball defense. It shows that even the best players in the country don't overlook learning the basics of stance.

Next is the Zig-Zag drill with a twist from a traditional version of this drill. Each on-ball defender will go through two rounds by guarding the ball to the half-court line. When the first dribbler reaches the half-court line, the defender starts the second round by executing a closeout to the baseline. Containment of the dribble and forcing changes in direction are critical elements that are taught.

About the Statistical Tracking of a Basketball Held Ball
in our Basketball Stats Tracking Referred Questions

Basketball Statistics Tracking Referred Questions:
About the Statistical Tracking of a Basketball Held Ball...

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions
"... Which is the statistical register when a defender forces an offensive player into a held ball ( also known as 'jump ball' ) situation ? ..."

If your team loses possession of the ball as the result of a held ball, a ball turnover must be charged.

The turnover is charged to the person who last has possession of the ball.

We have a turnover when your team has the ball, and you lose it to the other team.

A turnover can come in the form of a stolen pass, a pass that you throw out of bounds, it can be where they steal the ball away from your dribbler, it can be where you have a player stand in the paint for over three seconds, etc., etc, etc.

When the turnover does occurs or when a bad shot is forced during an ON BALL screen situation, that's means there is a direct influence of an opponent action: the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System refers to it as a FORCED TURNOVER.

When the turnover does occur WITHOUT any opponent influence or interference: a bad pass you YOURSELF throw out of bounds, we call it an UNFORCED TURNOVER.

The value of the turnover, doesn't vary in our metric, being the same for both types, but the eBA System report give to the coach the total quantity and percentages of Forced and Unforced Turnovers by separate, leading so to a deeper analysis of our possessions.

See in our forums the 'basketball held ball' topics and the exposition "Basketball Possessions Statistical Analysis" at eBA ONLINE.

All the terms in this post are widely explained at The eBA Basketball Encyclopedia.

About the Basketball Points Created and the Player Contribution
and Basketball Actuality News Video in our Thursday's Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About the Basketball Points Created and the Player Contribution

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
How much value is placed on an assist ?
Like the problems with rebounds and blocked shots, standard formulas try to arbitrarily assign a value to assists that would give credit to the 'assistant' and simultaneously take the same account of credit away from the 'assisted'.

Assists, though, unlike rebounds or blocked shots, have a definite scoring possession associated with them: there is no assists without points scored.

An individual floor percentage could be a way for not only evaluate the offensive efficiency of players, but also to calculate the points created by each player.

... a basketball assist for 2 easy points ...
Photograph: Day Life

"Individual Floor Percentage"=
scoring possessions by a player divided by his total possessions.

"Player's Scoring Possessions"=
field goals that weren't assisted on
+ a not specified percentage of his field goals that were assisted on
+ a not specified percentage of his assists
+ free throw made that represent a team scoring possession.

"Player's Total Possessions"=
all his scoring possessions
+ his missed field goals
+ free throws that weren't rebounded by his team
+ turnovers.

The question to go on with this topic resides in the value of that "not specified percentage" in each field.

About the Steals Concept and Statistical Tracking
and Basketball Actuality News Video in our Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About the Steals Concept and Statistical Tracking

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
In basketball, a steal occurs when a defensive player legally gains control of the ball from an offensive player. This can be done by deflecting and controlling, catching, or batting (to a teammate) a pass or dribble of an offensive player.

A steal may happen while the offensive player is dribbling, holding the ball, or by intercepting a pass. The defender must not touch the offensive player's hands or otherwise a foul is called.
Stealing the ball requires concentration, good anticipation, speed and fast reflexes and good hustle, all common traits of a good defender. However, like blocked shots, steals aren't always a perfect gauge of a player's defensive abilities.

An unsuccessful steal can result in the defender being out of position and unable to recover in time. Therefore, a steal is a gamble. And a steal usually leads to a fast break, the most exciting play in the sport.

If an offensive player loses possession of the basketball due to a steal, he is recorded as making a turnover and the defender is recorded with a steal, forced or unforced depending upon the play development.

About the Basketball Steals Concept and Statistical Tracking
Photograph: Zimbio.com

The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System records, in addition to the traditional stats, the points made from the forced and unforced steals done during the game. This number is not always similar, as people usually thinks, to the opponent's points off turnovers.

There is no necessarily prototypical position from which a player may get many steals from. While smaller, quicker guards tend to accumulate the most steals, there are many exceptions. For example, forward Rick Barry led the NBA in steals in 1974-75, and for many years center Hakeem Olajuwon lead his team in the category, consistently ranking among the league's leaders.

Therefore, the eBA System records the area and the whole situation where the steal occurred.

Steals were first recorded in the NBA's 1973-74 season. Kendall Gill ( on December 26, 1976 ) and Larry Kenon ( on April 3, 1999 ) are tied for most steals in a regular season NBA game with eleven.
The most steals in an NBA season is 301 by Alvin Robertson in 1985-86.

About the Bench Scoring Percentage - Value & Analysis
in our Basketball Stats Tracking Referred Questions

Basketball Statistics Tracking Referred Questions:
About the Bench Scoring Percentage - Value & Analysis

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions
"... How to measure the influence over the 'Bench Points Percentage', in the case of a season starter which in any o some games, by some reason of injury or coach decision, come from the bench and plays nearly its minutes played average ? ..."

A relevant contribution of the eBA System is to take the bench points of our team AND from the opponents not only as a Stats quantity, but as a center part of a game basketball analysis.

You can see it's analysis and discussion of the Bench Points Percentage Stats at the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis area, which includes, among others, the following aspects:

Bench Scoring=
• game's total,
• by quarter,
• at each quarter by separate,
• at game' last five minutes,
• shooting averages,

Miami basketball player Reggie Johnson, injured on center, sits on the bench talking to teammates DeQuan Jones, right, and Erik Swoope during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game against Florida State in Coral Gables, Fla.

Photograph: HurricaneSports.com

• changes quantity by game,
• at home;
• on the road,
• opening the game,
• from the bench,
• according to the plus minus, etc.
from our team and from the opponents teams all over the season and each aspect in relation to all other (f.ex. opening the gama on the road or at home, by quarters, etc).

Commentary:
The Bench Scoring Stat are more relevant at the college level.

Most players who goes on to the NBA may scores 20 points a game at least once a season.

Nevertheless, many a winning college team gets exposed in the NCAA for its lack of depth at their bench.

See in our forums the 'bench scoring percentage' topics and the exposition "Basketball Time Played Statistical Analysis" at eBA ONLINE.

• About this New (12/29/2018) Training Video
Before adding any actions, first you must come to understand the 5-out motion offense and be able to teach your players how to properly space, cut, and fill within it. Huggins demonstrates in this training video how to teach athletes proper spacing along with how to utilize the floor to creating ideal scoring opportunities.

Next, Huggins installs some of his favorite motion offense strategies. We'll see how players can use a traditional pass and cut action into a screen away to put the offense into position to curl to the basket or slip the screen if overplayed. With a flex cut, Coach Huggins uses a ball reversal and screen away to create backside action as the ball is reversed. Before filling out, players look to step off the lane line and set the flex screen, creating an open layup concept.
