About the Basketball Individual Charge Statistical Tracking and the Steals Charting
in our Basketball Stats Tracking Referred Questions

Basketball Statistics Tracking Referred Questions:
About the Basketball Individual Charge Statistical Tracking

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions
"... Can we state that each individual charge taken is equal to a steal ?

It seems to me that it is equal value to that of a steal because in both instances, you take away a possession from your opponent.

How is this stat collected into season rankings in the eBA Basketball Statistics System ? ..."

You wrote that each individual charge taken is equal to a steal. Although in both cases we have a steal I don't agree with this: the value of both actions is not the same.

A fair amount of the value of a steal is not just ending the opposition's possession but the fast-break opportunity it provides. We'll go on with this discussion (see below), but an important quantity of some data about the offensive value of a steal is well developed in the exposition about this topic in the eBA Basketball Statistics Tracking System.

Meanwhile use the option "search" of the eBA Forum to look for "steal" and the other messages about this topic.

Is Manu Ginobilibi flopping... trying to reach to a bad pass... or flying back to Argentina ? In this Picture from 'only nba 10' presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis

Photograph: only nba 10

This is only the index of the "Steals Charting" chapter from my exposition about 'Steals Analysis' at eBA ONLINE Clinics. Each principle is fully explained and discussed at that exposition throughout concepts, examples and case studies.

"... eBA Rebound Charting Principles:

A - Steals Dispute Situation:

1. Undisputed steals: 1 or more players from the same team are in the proximity of where the ball is stolen.
2. Disputed steals: the same number of players dispute the ball ( 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2, etc.)
3. Steal under favorable conditions : our team has more players disputing for the ball ( 2 vs 1 , etc.)
4. Steal under unfavorable conditions: our team has less players in the dispute ( 1 vs. 2 , etc. ) ..."

"... B - Steal Type Recording:

1. Stealing from the dribble;
2. Stealing off the pass;
3. Stealing off a post player; ..."

"... C - Steal Analysis:

1. Non-steal forced turnovers: to pressure an offensive player into traveling, a double dribble, a bad pass, or drawing a charge.
2. Steal forced turnovers.
3. Get out position going for a steal: risking negative results such as penetration and open shots;
4. Steal without gambling: do not get out position frequently and do not risks the own defense. ..."

See in these blogs and in our forums the 'steal' topics and the exposition "Basketball Steals Tracking & Analysis" at eBA ONLINE.

All the terms in this post are widely explained at The eBA Basketball Encyclopedia.

About the Efficiency in Different Basketball Possession Start Cases
& the Basketball Training Video in our Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics

Weekly Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Efficiency in Different Basketball Possession Start Cases

Basketball Statistician's Sunday's Reflexions
In the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System there is a study on the average offensive efficiency in different possession start cases. Is was made by Prof. using data from play-by-plays of 2000 games of the Euroleague from 1988.

The research was presented in the still finished eBA Basketball Statistics Clinics, and give us, among a lot of other analysis elements, the order of the starting of the possessions ordered from highest to lowest offensive efficiency:

01 - Steal,

02 - Offensive Rebound after 2p FG missed,

03 - Offensive Rebound after 3p FG missed,

04 - Defensive Rebound after 2p FG missed,

05 - Opponent non-steal turnover,

06 - Defensive Rebound after 3p FG missed,

07 - FT made,

08 - 2p FG made,

09 - 3p FG made,

10 - Start of quarter,

11 - Defensive Rebound after FT missed.

About the Basketball Game Pace and the Turnovers:
From the same research at eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System about the influence of the 'game pace' on the 'turnover ratios' of individual players, we can infer:

...there is a connected increase in the number of TO due to pace: as pace increases, players/teams get more TO/Min and TO/G.

Therefore we may suppose the sooner your team shoots the ball, the less probably you have a chance for a TO. Or that time of possession is what's mutually related to TO.

But, while the presumption is that a faster pace means more errors and more turnovers, if you shoot the ball before you pass it, you turn the ball over less.

So, generally, turnover rates do not become larger with quicker pace.

In this case, you wouldn't expect players' turnover rates to vary too much.

Many other factors could have an effect upon TO rates/possession used or touch year to year:

 • different players in the same organization

 • modifications to an organization that does not suit a particular player's style

 • injuries (players depending on first step with knee/ankle injuries, and injured wrist, etc.) ...

' Pain is Temporary ! ' by Eric Thomas in our Life Motivational Videos Series

Life Motivational Videos:
Pain is Temporary !
by Eric Thomas

... ' Pain is Temporary ! ' by Eric Thomas ...

Listen to me. PAIN IS TEMPORARY! It may last for a minute, or an hour, or a day, or even a year. But eventually it will subside and something else will take it’s place. If I quit however, it will last forever.

I dare you to take a little pain. I dare you. I dare you not to go home. Somebody said “I feel bad, I’m gonna go home.” Go through it. Your not going to die! At the end of pain is success. Your not gonna die because you’re feeling a little pain. I’m not eating like I eat at home. That’s why you’re going to go to the next level, because if you ate like you ate at home, you’re going to remain a boy or a girl. Its time to become men and women.

But I’m exactly where I want to be because I got to commit my entire being to this thing. I got to breath it, sleep it, eat it. Until you get there, you’ll never be successful in life. But once you get there, I guarantee you the world is yours. So work hard and you can have whatever it is that you want.

Basketball Block Shot Analysis & Statistics Tracking:
With or Without Ball Control is the Question!

Basketball Block Shot Analysis & Statistics Tracking:
With or Without Ball Control is the Question!

The answer was:
A1 goes up for a shot under the basket and the defensive player B2 knocks the ball in the hands of the shooter while they are both in the air, and there is no case of foul. A1 then let the ball fall to the ground before landing back on the court, gathers the ball up and makes a basket.

What is the call for the game and the statistical tracking in case of turnover?

Celtics small forward Paul Pierce has his shot blocked by Charlotte Bobcats power forward Tyrus Thomas during their NBA basketball game in Charlotte, North Carolina. Photo: REUTERS/Chris Keane

By definition (see our eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis Encyclopedia ) a blocked shot occurs when a defensive player successfully and legally deflects a shot from an offensive player by touching and rejecting the ball on its way to the basket, and before it has reached its highest point, in order to prevent from a field goal.

In order to be a legal action, the  block must occur while the shot is travelling upward. It it is heading downward when the defender hits it, it is ruled a goaltending and counts as a made basket.

We have an altered shot when a blocker changes the shooter shot causing the shooter to miss the basket.

Opponents' field goal percentage vary widely depending on which interior defender is close to the basket. Milwaukee's Larry Sanders is one of the most effective interior defenders in the league: opponents struggle to score when he is near the basket. This not the case with Boston Celtics' David Lee: when he is close to the basket, opponents score at very high efficiencies. (Click on the picture to read the full article by Adam E. Gallagher from  Tropics of Meta). In this Image: by Adam E. Gallagher from  Tropics of Meta presented by eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis Group.

If the ball is knocked out of the offensive players hands while they are in mid air, then they regain control once they have landed, this is legal.

If the ball is forced out during the time that the player is in the air, the player regains control (while in the air) and lands, it is a travel.
eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking=
Forced Turnover

If the offensive player returns to the floor, holding the ball, and the ball has never left his hands, one of two things are possible:

1) if the defensive player has only one hand on the ball, it is a travel against the offensive player.
eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking=
Forced Turnover.

Coachtube and Tom Izzo

2) if the defensive player has both hands on the ball it is a jump ball which will be resolved according with the alternate possession rule

• About this New Training Video
Oftentimes during his coaching career, Coach Ryan's offenses were thought of as slow and methodical, but in this video he shows why that's not entirely true, and shares the secrets of why the Swing offense has been so successful. Some of the key points that Ryan stresses during this video include:

• Spacing the floor
• Preventing turnovers
• Getting more shots
• Offensive rebounding
• Fundamentals

While most coaches preach these concepts, Ryan lives by them. Because of this, his teams have always been some of the most efficient in the country. In particular, Ryan highlights the importance of getting a good shot every time down the court - which is why his offense is so effective.

"... During Michael Jordan's amazing '86-'87, Wilt was always in the papers because Jordan was always scoring the most this's since Wilt Chamberlain or taking the most that's since Wilt Chamberlain.

And that ain't gonna change, folks. Not in this century. Take big-scoring games, for example. Michael Jordan hit 60 points, twice last year. ..."

Coach Smart led VCU to over 25 wins,
including four straight 27-win seasons (2009-2013).

Pressure defense is a critical component of Coach Smart's Havoc style of play. More than just occasionally running a press, Havoc begins with a mindset, a philosophy and values.

With Coach Smart's defensive system, you can trap your opponents anywhere on the court and force them to play at an up-tempo pace. In this training video, Coach Smart shares the five core values that go hand-in-hand with Havoc and have made his teams successful.

On the court, Smart demonstrates the simple yet vital concept of how to trap. Learn how to close out correctly to the ball handler, force an obvious pass, and be "elastic" in the trap. He also provides off-the-ball directions. Smart stresses proper distance between your man and the ball, shares insights into the value of proper foot and hand fakes, and gets energized by players' willingness to get back-tips while running the press.

Smart walks players through their responsibilities for the "Double Fist" Man-to-Man Press. These examples are clear and concise and show each step, so any coach can put in this pressure defense.

Smart also teaches his version of the Diamond Press. This 1-2-1-1 attack creates great opportunities to force your opponents into bad spots. Traps come quick and easy; offenses are forced to pass to players they don't want handling the ball.

Basketball Tracking Stats Case Studies ~ Basketball Field Goals Statistics Tracking Case Study

Basketball Statistician's Digest:
eBA sketball Statistics Case Study Conclusion

Basketball Statistics eBA Case Study
About Basketball Field Goals Statistics Tracking Case Study

" ... As the shot clock is about to expire, A1 ...

1.- throws a bad pass;
2.- throws a pass that B5 tips;
3.- throws a good pass that A3 mishandles or
4.- has the ball stripped away.

In all cases, A3 recovers the loose ball and shoots a desperation shot that misses the rim as the shot-clock horn sounds. The ball is
awarded to Team B for a throw-in.

What is the proper ruling and the correct INDIVIDUAL or COLLECTIVE statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System including the type of the registration ( type of turnover; forced, unforced, individual or collective turnover, good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound; assist made, potential, missed or double assist; etc. ) ... ?"

Basketball Tracking Stats Case Studies ~ Basketball Field Goals Statistics Tracking Case Study

Photograph: NY Daily News

Conclusion:

Basketball Statistics Philosophy:

A player should not be charged for a shot from the field influenced by the illegal actions of himself or herself, or any teammates or opponents, unless the shot results in a FGM.

eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:

A field-goal attempt (FGA) is charged to a player any time the player shoots, throws or taps a live ball at his own basket, when, in the opinion of the statistician, the player is attempting to score a goal.

A field goal made (FGM) is credited to a player any time a FGA by the player results in the goal being counted or results in an awarded score of two (or three) points except when the field goal is the result of a defensive player tipping the ball in the offensive basket.

If the statistician is in doubt about whether a shooting foul is a player-control foul, the actions of the officials will indicate the correct ruling. If the foul is a player-control foul, it will be so indicated by the officials and any shot will be waved of.

The statistician must records each shot related to:
- the game situation (time and score)
- ball location (sideline or endline)
- player location ( location of shot in our 15 zones basketball court diagram )
- type of shot (shot selection)
- shooting clock (seconds remaining)
- shot result ( made or missed ) and offensive and defensive alignments.

eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking:

In all cases, do not charge A3 with a FGA.

In 1.-, 2.- and 4.-, charge A1 with a FORCED or an UNFORCED TURNOVER.
depending upon the defenders actions.

In 3.-, charge A3 with a FORCED or an UNFORCED TURNOVER.
depending upon A3's defender action.

Does the Home Court Advantage Really Exists ? and Basketball Actuality News Video
in our Thursday's Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
Does the Home Court Advantage Really Exists ?

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
Home teams may be, typically, better than away teams.

Looking at home-away games during the first half of the season, the game trends indicates home teams often outmatch away teams.

This indicates that in the first half of the basketball season, home teams are in a
general and inherent manner stronger than away teams, in a relation
of 70-75% of winning percentage.

During the second half, this difference related to the home teams is matched and home and away teams winning percentage are equals to the same degree.

This reality brings to the conclusion that winning percentage of home teams concurrently goes down during this time.

Why this difference between the two halves of the season ?

the Basketball Home Court Advantage
Photograph: Covers

On the remark that average score margin is highly mutually related to the quality of being able to win, we must take into consideration that average score margin can be adjusted for force of games agenda and variations in day-to-day ability.

A 2/3 winning record of home teams is often cited as attest that home court advantage really exists.

But all the analysis records neither validate nor contradict that the home court advantage exists, only give us the necessity of a way to calculate it more carefully.

Basketball Fouls & Stats Rules: False Double Foul Situation
in our Basketball Stats Tracking Referred Questions & Basketball Statistics Video Case Study

Basketball Statistics Tracking Referred Questions:
Basketball Fouls & Stats Rules: False Double Foul Situation

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions
"... A1 is fouled on the arm by B1 as he taps the ball towards the basket following a teammate’s field goal attempt bounces off the ring. A1 then comes down violently into B2 who has legal position before the ball passes through the basket.
The second official calls the foul on B1 and the first official calls a player control foul on A-1.
The two officials confer one with the other from the moment that they both have called a foul.
What is the correct rule and, specially, the statistical tracking according with the eBA Basketball Statistics
System
? ..."

This situation is a false double foul. A1 is fouled in the act of shooting and then perpetrates a player control foul.

Because of the player control foul by A1, the goal is declared null. Since A1 was fouled in the act of shooting, A1 is awarded 2 free throws with no line up on the lane for the reason that the ball will remain dead after the free throws.

The ball is awarded to team B for a throw in on the end line at the spot nearest to where the foul occurred, in this case on the free throw lane line extended spot throw in.

eBA Statistical Tracking= We track as following
1 - the missed FG of A1's teammate;
2 - an Offensive Rebound from A1 (the tap);
3 - a made foul against B1;
4 - a received shooting-foul in favour of A1;
5 - the 2 free throws from A1 which ends the Team A's possession; and finally
6 - the player control foul by A1 which begins the new possession for Team B.

Rule 4: Definitions - Sections 15-23

Double fouls:
a. A double personal foul is a situation in which two opponents commit personal fouls against each other at approximately the same time.
b. A double technical foul is a situation in which two opponents commit technical fouls against each other at approximately the same time.

A false double foul is a situation in which there are fouls by both teams, the second of which occurs before the clock is started following the first, and such that at least one of the attributes of a double foul is absent.

A false multiple foul is a situation in which there are two or more fouls by the same team and the last foul is committed before the clock is started following the first, and at least one of the attributes of a multiple foul is absent.

False double fouls are rare but do happen occasionally. There's also a bunch of exceptions and technicalities to this rule.

The NFHS offers this definition (4-19-9):
A false double foul is a situation in which there are fouls by both teams, the second of which occurs before the clock is started following the first, and such that at least one of the attributes of a double foul is absent.

In other words, it's a double foul committed by opposing teams ( not necessarily the same players ). The second part of the double foul has to occur before the clock is restarted (before the clock is stopped due to the first foul). Here's an example by the NFHS:

A1 leaps high and is fouled by B1 as he taps the ball which subsequently goes through A's basket. A1 fouls B2 in returning to the floor ( e.g. on a charge ). A1 does not get credit for the basket due to the player control foul but does receive 2 free throws with the lane cleared (due to the foul by B1). Team B receives the ball following the free throws.

As it was said, false double fouls are rarely called. I would suspect that most officials would say they called the first foul and called the play dead after that. Plus this kind of scenario rarely happens.

You can read the full list of the eBA Basketball Personal Fouls Classifications at the eBA Basketball Statistics System Book.

Basketball Personal Fouls: Double Punishment because Official Error ?

Double Punishment because Official Error ?

"... Another example of the eternal problem of the game analyst by means of video: we'll punish the player twice because an official´s error ?
The referee call a 5 seconds turnover: no matter how you look at this play, there is no possible way that it could be an violation, it is evidently a play to silence the whistle.
Now, how we should track this play, in the case the invented turnover should be called ?
And what about the pushing foul over the shooter ( White #30 ) in the last play ( min 2:01 ) ..."
