Scouting & Statistics Communities Feuded like Members of Rival Families

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About Scouting & Statistics Communities Feuded like Members of Rival Families

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
"For the past recent years, the scouting and statistics communities have feuded like members of rival families. Basketball scouters who evaluate players with their eyes are treated with contempt and the numbers-oriented people are cast as cold, computer-wielding propellerheads with no appreciation for scouting intangibles. Not surprisingly, the camps have grown so polarized that they have retreated to their respective bunkers rather than engage in open and intelligent debate. Instead of gathering longtime scouts and statistics experts to discuss all the great issues in this arena."

"It is correct that we have coaches that "are not stat guys", that only trust what they see, and they think they don't need a bunch of numbers to get in the way. Others, use stats in various ways and are many which can speak about a tendex type formula.

Most of us, being in the basketball statistics analysis theme, and specially the analysis area, begin to understand that basketball is a difficult game to quantify, in some degree because of the way the game changes through time, and partially because of the powerful impact of teamwork, with the constant moving interaction of 12 players and the ball.

We are the same people which understand that at some level, we use the available information to better understand the game: no one stat can explain everything, so the combination of the numbers and the plays appreciation, eBA statistics analysis basis, is by this time the correct way."

Basketball scouting and basketball analytics don’t need to be oil and water. In this image from HoopsThink presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis .

Basketball scouting and basketball analytics don’t need to be oil and water. They tell you different things, but they’re not entirely different. They can be used to supplement one another because they are pieces of the same puzzle. Here’s how you can do it: eBA sketball Analysis System.

"Basketball rates player's defense very badly meanwhile baseball, relatively, has multiple manners in this area. A basketball player may get a lot of blocks and simultaneously be a bad defender. On the other hand, another player may be an excellent man-to-man defender and at the same time don't get a lot of steals. A broad set of statistical methods can say us that the player A is better than the player B on offense, but they can't give us definitive elements about those players defensively. Only a good game analyst scouting professional can perform it.

Sobre las comunidades de Estadígrafos y Scouting del Baloncesto

Image: Basketball-Statistics.com

Now, we know that basketball has a lot of difficult areas of quantitative information when we translate a game into statistics. For example, categories as "allowed points - from 2, 3 and PF bonus"; "offensive rebounds allowed"; "turnovers - that aren't steals" and "good and bad personal fouls" - see our complete list of statistical analysis categories here, which are included in the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System, are not accounted in the traditional statistical methods, specially those made at live game time.

Gathering and analyzing those categories of data will give us a sort of information, for example, about how many unguarded shots - no fastbreaks plays - were taken by the opponents, and how many were allowed to us. This kind of info is the correct way in evaluating defense."

"Don't you think that basketball players have been dehumanized too much by this stats tend ? Ignoring the human side is an adjustment for breakage.

Statisticians and scouter must work together: to evaluate a player for purposes of building a team implies a lot more than whether that player can play.

Numbers can help with analyzing what a player does on the court, but to build a team not only means numbers....

Statistician's Digest: Basketball Registering Statistics Case Studies

Basketball Statistician's Digest:
eBA sketball Statistics Case Study: About Basketball Rebounds

Basketball Statistics eBA Case Study
Different Situations in a Basketball Rebound... Case Study

"... A missed shot comes off the rim and bounces along the floor. A1 is in position to pick up the ball, but B5 gains control. However, B5 fouls A1...

• case a) before either can touch the ball, or
• case b) as B5 is the first to touch the ball, or
• case c) after B5 is first to gain control of the ball, or
• case d) after A1 is first to touch the ball.

What is the statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System in each one of the given situations, including the type of the registration ( forced or unforced TO; good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound, etc.) ... ?"

Conclusion:
eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:
A player should be credited with a rebound only if the player earned that rebound before the ball was dead. What happened after the ball became dead and what would have happened if the ball had not become dead might be different.

The statistician should not attempt to decide what would have happened, but should decide only what did happen. However, if there is doubt about player control, the statistician may assume that there was control.

Sometimes there is doubt about whether a player has gained control of the ball before a certain act takes place. In such cases, the statistician should use the following guidelines.
• (a) If the statistician feels there was a possibility of player control, then the play shall be treated as though there was player control.
• (b) If the statistician feels there definitely was not a possibility of player control, then it shall be treated as though there was no player control.

Different Situations in a Basketball Rebound
Photograph from Red Box Pictures

eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking:

• In (a) the ball became dead when the foul was committed. Charge B5 with a BAD Personal Foul and credit Team A with a LONG UNDISPUTED Dead-ball Offensive Rebound.

• In (b) if B5 gained control before the foul, the official will have indicated that the foul was a player-control foul and B5 would be credited with an individual LONG DISPUTED Defensive Rebound and charged with a FORCED Turnover.

Urban Meyer and Coachtube

If there is no indication of player control, then credit Team A with a LONG DISPUTED Dead-ball Offensive Rebound.

• In (c) credit B5 with an individual LONG DISPUTED Def Rebound and charge him or her with an UNFORCED turnover

• In (d) if the statistician thinks that A1 possibly had control before the foul, credit A1 with an individual LONG DISPUTED Off Rebound.

If the statistician thinks that A1 definitely did not have control, credit Team A with a LONG UNDISPUTED Dead-ball Offensive Rebound.

Rule Fundamental= If, after a field goal attempt, a player touches the ball while it is in its upward flight , all restrictions related to goal tending and interference shall apply.

2-3 Zone Defense: Basketball Players Responsibilities
Training Video with Mike Hopkins

with Mike Hopkins,
University of Washington Head Coach;
2018 Pac-12 Coach of the Year;
former Syracuse University Assistant Coach;
Court Coach for Team USA in 1998, 2000, 2001, 2010 and 2012;
two-year starter for Syracuse
and was a team captain his senior year!

( Para la Versión en Español: Ver a Continuación del Vídeo! )

Syracuse basketball is acclaimed for its exclusive use of the 2-3 zone defense. Mike Hopkins has a unique expertise in this defensive style. He has both played for legendary coach Jim Boeheim and coached for the Syracuse Orange for over 20 years. Along the way, they have made postseason appearances every year with just one lone exception. This is in large part because of the 2-3 zone's ability to frustrate opponents.

In this training video Coach Hopkins gives the "secret sauce" to the Syracuse 2-3 zone through a detailed explanation of player responsibilities of each position!

With his coverage of each position, Coach Hopkins explain critical teaching points for guards, forwards, and centers. With the ball at the wing, Coach Hopkins shows how players should slide to take away the shot without giving up driving lanes and how to take away the high post pass and cover return passes to the top. The ball in the short corner initiates their "54 Trap." Coach Hopkins demonstrates how to pressure opponents with this trap and how to counter the high post dive with help-side defenders.

About Basketball Tall Players and the Basketball Winning Percentage Statistics
and Basketball From the Archives Video in our Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About Basketball Tall Players and the Basketball Winning Percentage Statistics

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
Is there at the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System a research about the influence of the tall players in the winning percentage and the game statistics evolution of the outside and inside players in this game dominated by giants...?

Some data to go on with this question and the discussion:
in fact, there is in the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System a research about the influence of the tall players in the winning percentage and the game statistics evolution of the outside and inside players.

And some data about... only three teams won the NBA ring without a 2.13 m player in their opening quintet in the last 25 years:

... the Detroit Pistons in 2003-04 ( with Rasheed Wallace, 2.11, as the tall man of the opening team ), newly the Pistons in 1988-89 ( with Laimbeer, 2.11, as the tall man ) and the Sixers of 1982-83 ( with Moses Malone, 2.08, as the tall of the opening quintet ). And, speaking about the Euroleague, only one team: the Panathinaikos of 2001-02, with Alvertis, 2.06, as the tall man of the team.

And to close this the first section of the answer, with all that was said we reach to the 'Seven Feet Theory', which is supported by recognized NBA scouters: to win actually a championship you must have a 7 feet ( 2,13 m ) player in the middle of the paint area.

Sun Mingming, the 7-foot-9 Chinese center, the world's tallest basketball player
Photograph: angry asian man

Read also these related posts:

"... Let us now have a closer look to the first two changes proposed here by Dennis Hans. He thinks that we’ll not only reduce the threat of foul trouble, we’ll remake center into a full-time basketball position, where quickness, creativity and skill, rather than brute strength or a gift for flopping, are paramount.

1) Make non-brutal illegal screens a loss-of-possession violation, like traveling. Only dirty picks – sticking out an elbow, forearm or bony knee – will be a foul.
Probably 90 percent of illegal screens fall into the non-dirty category.

2) Quit treating intentional fouls as if they were non-intentional. Current penalties for the latter are fine; for the former, they are so weak that they function as rewards. ..."

Read more: Center as a Full-time Basketball Position

"... And I think that in order to recognize the importance of the tall men´s work we must reach the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis and read the chapter of the opponents errors forced by our tall men and the block shots which ends in our baskets on the other side of the court.

Tall men are not as spectacular as the guards, but remember my post with the 'Seven Feet Theory', which is supported by recognized NBA scouters: to win actually a championship you must have a 7 feet ( 2,13 m ) player in the middle of the paint area.

Teams with small players are more spectacular and quick, play funny basketball and may reach the top... but the winners are teams with tall men. ..."

About the Efficiency in Different Possession Start Cases and the Fast Bbreak
in our Basketball Stats Tracking Referred Questions & Basketball Statistics Video Case Study

Basketball Statistics Tracking Referred Questions:
About the Efficiency in Different Possession Start Cases and the Fast Break

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions
"... When exactly - within how many seconds - we have a 'fast break' ?

Fast break points is a stat that TV broadcasters always talk about - saying how some team ranks in it on the season.

Is this stat collected into season rankings in the eBA Basketball Statistics
System
?
And what is its relationship with the efficiency in different possession start cases ? ..."

As was explained in another post, when we explained how to record the plays according the 24 seconds rule, the eBA Basketball Statistics System tracks this stats into season rankings.

From the >eBA ONLINE Clinic we know that the system tracks the plays according to the shooting clock, within 4 - 8- 16 - 20 and 24 seconds. Therefore, the fast breaks are the plays recorded in the first 4/5 seconds of the shooting clock, subtracting out offensive-rebound putbacks.

Presently in the Saturday's eBA Annual Clinic we are discussing about a norm related to the number of passes in a fast break.

Different Basketball Possession Start Cases and the Fast Break
Photograph: from Flickr

About the Basketball Efficiency in Different Possession Start Cases:
Here I post some comments on the results included in this post: Efficiency in Different Possession Start Cases.

The complete analysis is included in my exposition about "Possessions" in the eBA ONLINE Clinics:

~ The manner your opponent scores (2p, 3p or FT) does not have a major effect upon your efficiency;

~ Most teams performs better when the possession starts with a defensive rebound after an opponent missed 2p FG;

~ It's easier to put back the ball when an offensive rebound follows a 2 point shot than after a 3-pointer;

~ Good defense makes better team's offense by approximately 5% and good offense improves defense in the same way;

~ A steal is a great offensive tool, more than an offensive rebound;

~ The high efficiency in regards to steals is reasonable because a steal leads to a fast break which is one the most efficient offensive opportunities as well as an offensive rebound;

~ The biggest difference between NBA and European results is efficiency after non-steal turnovers probably because in the NBA an steal is always credited if the ball stays live, which is not always the case in European stats: the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System records the steals according to the NBA conception;

~ It is harder to take an offensive rebound after a 3p missed than after a 2p missed;

~ One factor that makes bigger the average efficiency after Free Throws is that, because of the team foul penalty, there are more Free Throws near the end of a quarter;

~ The penalty situation also helps to increase efficiency: the net result is a higher average for Free Throws cases than it should be.

See in our forums the 'technical foul tracking' topics and the exposition "Basketball Fouls Tracking & Analysis" at eBA ONLINE.

All the terms in this post are widely explained at The eBA Basketball Encyclopedia.

This topic is resumed in the eBA Basketball Statistics System Book

Video Case Study:
Basketball 3/5/8/24 Seconds Cases: Try for Goal at the Expiration of time in the 4th quarter

Try for Goal at the Expiration of time in the 4th quarter

"... 4 second to the end, 55:52 the whites 'Patriots' 3 points back and with the ball, only a 3-points conversion should send the game to an OT. But... after the field goal made apparently for 3 point, one official signals a three point made and another official run from the left of the screen to call WHAT HE SAW: the player slightly step on the three points line, what makes the final game score to 55:54 against the Patriots, and... no OT !...

How the eBA Basketball Statistics System analyze this situation ? What type of turnover ? ..."

About Basketball Per-Minute Statistics and the Player Contribution Measure
in our Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About Basketball Per-Minute Statistics and the Player Contribution Measure

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
Per-minute Statistics: "... Per minute stats are a good manner to compare players within a team, seeing how a player off the bench might fare compared to the player in front of him in the rotation, but we must be careful about players who scarcely play - Jackie Butler may have averaged 96 points per 48 in the 5 minutes he played for the Knicks last year, but very doubtful he could have achieved it.

Also, we must be careful comparing players from one team to another. For example, the season Steve Nash averaged 16.1 assists per 48 while Tony Parker averaged just 8.6 - a large part of the reason for that is the pace and style Phoenix plays gave Nash more opportunities than Parker.

Per-48 Stats is not meant to be a projection of what a player would average if he played 48 minutes per game. Keep in mind that it is simply an expression of per-minute stats.

They are expressed as per-48 so that the resulting averages are easy to deal with: "23 points per 48 minutes" is easier to read and understand than ' 0,479 points per minute '; ..."

Players are not so happy 'playing their minutes' on the bench... but here Shack O'neill, Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher plays their 'special' connection between them... inbounds and outbounds ! In this picture from Lipstick Alley presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis
Photograph: Lipstick Alley

Player Contribution Measure: "... Time played is a parameter not used with frequency in player's valuation although it is included in the box stats.

To relate player's valuation with his minutes played will give us his "efficiency", degree of cooperation into the team and with his teammates, interesting factor for the coach, the player and the game analyst.

The team's 'efficiency' per minute is obtained by dividing the valuation points, taken from the statistics, by the possible play minutes ( 40 or 48 ) and the mean of player's efficiency per minute by dividing newly by 200 or 240 ( total minutes played by 5 players on the court ).

The result compared with the player's individual ( valuation / minutes played ) and multiplied by his minutes in play will give us his efficiency or degree of cooperation over or under the team's mean.

From the moment that you can have only five players on the floor at one time, which invariably leads to some players seeing more action than others, how can you measure the contribution of players who play less and thus have fewer points, rebounds, and so on, than the starters?

The still concluded eBA Annual Basketball Statistics Clinic uses the per-minute stat to measure a player's value in terms of any other raw data stat for players with a low range of minutes played.
Say that one player scores eight points in a game, however, plays only eight minutes.

His per-minute scoring average is one point per minute, which extrapolated to a 40-minute game, would be 40 points per game.

But, actually, nobody in the NBA, WNBA or Euroleague, for that matter - averages 40 points per game. Suddenly, those eight points looks more impressive.

Although coaches find the per-minute stat helpful in evaluating players, but it has its limitations. Longer time periods belongs surely to the best players, and shorter time periods may yield misleading stats. ..."

"... Imagine a player that scores a three-pointer in his first minute of play and then sat out the rest of the game. Does anyone truly believe that he would've scored 144 points (3 x 48) in that game had he played the 48 minutes ? ..."

In this training video we'll see why Jay Wright is considered one of the best teachers of the game as well. Coach Wright shares his three-quarter court, 1-2-2 defensive pressure scheme. This is the same scheme that aided in the Wildcats' run to the 2016 NCAA Championship.

We'll see how to convert back into a 1-3-1 and 2-3 zone out of a multiple defense look. Coach Wright shows us:

• How to teach your players to stay aggressive while playing zone defense
• How to "tag" someone so that players know who they're guarding and boxing out while in zone defense
• How to use man principles to play zone defense.

About Basketball Steals and Defensive Efficiency and the Defense By The Numbers
and the Video Clipping in our Weekly Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts:
Basketball Steals and Defensive Efficiency

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
In the still concluded eBA Annual Basketball Statistics Clinic there was a debate about basketball steals: is a good number of steals a good indicator for the efficiency of the defense ?

Some thoughts to begin the discussion:

 • ...players or teams with the best steals averages are not as a highly likely consequence the best defensive players or steals...

 • ...if players go for too many steals, the probabilities are their defensive efficiency including everything is set at a disadvantage from that...

 • ...steals percentage (steals per possession) is a good statistic to consider...

 • ...declaring as an attribute or quality a defense on steals isn't going to be as being marked by a favorable outcome as one based on forcing misses...

 • ...if your aggressive style defense is more impressive than your team playing a more conforming to a standard defense, you'll have to examine and note the similarities or differences of your numbers with something...

The discussion and my analysis will continue on the thread "Steal Statistics: Cases & Registration" at the Processing Statistics Board.

basketball steats analysis
Photograph: Marin Independent Journal

Basketball Steals & Defense By The Numbers:

Data collected since 1988 by eBA Stats.com Team reflects the good and bad of the team’s defense.

We tracked possession-by-possession who was responsible for defending shots, forcing turnovers, committing fouls that resulted in free throws, or stealing the ball including effective ball denial defense.

The data suggests broad defensive principles where guards and perimeter defenders can pressure the ball and make opponents uncomfortable on the perimeter, but always with focus on the team’s force rules that funnel penetration to certain locations.

At those defined locations, the perimeter defender knows he’ll have help from a teammate — usually a big man.

This eBA Stats approach is very valid, and more detailed than what we see at another statistical systems. This kind of information is extremely useful and is being studied during the current eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System Clinic.

The goal is to steal the ball and create turnovers by always having a defender close to the offensive player, limit the number of open looks at the basket, while simultaneously having big men challenge a greater proportion of the offense’s shot attempts.

This serves to both steal the ball and create turnovers and increase the statistical likelihood of misses.

Basketball Tracking Stats Case Studies ~ Basketball Free Throws Tracking Case Study

Basketball Statistician's Digest:
eBA sketball Statistics Case Study Conclusion

Basketball Statistics eBA Case Study
About a Basketball Disqualifying Foul and Points Scored Tracking Case Study

" ... The player A4, in the act of shooting a 3 pointer, he releases the ball and the player B6 punches him with closed hand in his face, the ref whistles and simultaneously sounds the game clock buzzer to indicates the end of the game and the ball goes into the basket, the ref ratify the basket and disqualifies B6, informing about all the events to the game officials.

The question is how many additional free throws the player A4 will shot, one or two free throws ?

What is the proper ruling and the correct INDIVIDUAL or COLLECTIVE statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System including the type of the registration ( type of turnover; forced, unforced, individual or collective turnover, good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound; assist made, potential, missed or double assist; etc. ) ... ?"

Basketball Free Throws Statistics Tracking
Photograph: Soda Head

Conclusion:

eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:

A free throw made (FTM) is credited to a player any time a FTA by that player results in the throw being counted or results in an awarded score of one point.

Basketball Statistics Philosophy:

A player should not be charged for a shot from the field influenced by the illegal actions of himself, or any teammates or opponents; in the latter case, unless the shot results in a FGM.

Commentary:

According to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System when we have a situation of any foul continued by a goal we are speaking about an additional free throw, that's means, the player victim of the flagrant foul will throw a free throw and the game is over ( or goes into an eventual over time ); in this example the player made three points and a possible additional point more.

eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking:

• A4, a field goal made for three points + a received foul + a free throw attempt.

• B6, a Disqualifying foul made.

There is no tracking of a turnover , because there is no another possession in this case.

With a full court press at the ready, your team can more easily play catch-up, play more players, and control tempo when it needs to. Now, you can learn from one of the best Mid-Major pressure coaches in the country!

Keith Dambrot has compiled an impressive resume as head coach at the University of Akron. Under his leadership, the Zips have won at least 22 games each season from 2005 to 2013. One reason he has been so successful is his smothering, full-court pressure defense.

Coach Dambrot uses the whole-part-whole approach to teach the system, talks about the main elements involved, and examines the rules for any trapping system as it pertains to structure, alignment, and individual responsibilities.

Former SVSM and current Akron coach Keith Dambrot, who coached LeBron James while at St. Vincent-St. Mary's High School, says James should ignore all the talk about money, because he will be incredibly wealthy no matter where he plays. The endorsements will follow him. In this photograph by Phil Masturzo for Akron Beacon Journal presented by eBA Stats Basketball Statistics Analysis .
