Basketball Statistics Tracking Referred Questions:
About the Basketball Statistics Box Score
"... We know that a properly completed box score should balance.

A properly completed box score should be balanced. To make this determination, the statistician should add the total number of individual, team and dead-ball rebounds for both teams. This number should equal the total number of missed shots ( field and free ) for both teams.
What the statistician must do if the box score does not balance and the mistake cannot be found ?
A better balance can be achieved if rebounds are kept according to whether they are 'offensive' or 'defensive' rebounds.
This must include both team and dead-ball rebounds. In this case, the sum of Team A's offensive rebounds and Team B's defensive rebounds must equal the total number of missed shots by Team A. Also, the sum of Team B's offensive rebounds and Team A's defensive rebounds must equal the number of missed shots by Team B.
Neither check guarantees that there are no mistakes, but they do indicate that mistakes are unlikely. If the box score does
not balance and the mistake cannot be found, the eBA System propose the following steps which may help:
There is only one man who has been with the NBA since it’s inception. There is only one man who wrote the story for the Inquirer the night Wilt scored 100 points. And there is only one man who gave us stats such as the Blocked Shot and the Triple Double. His name is Harvey Pollack, and the 90-year stat guru still has a small office at the Wells Fargo Center, where he serves as director of statistical information for the Philadelphia 76ers.
1.- Check the dead-ball rebounds. Look at the number of two-shot fouls where the first FTA was missed.
2.- Check the team rebounds. Think about whether either team was awarded the ball for a throw-in when the ball went out of bounds after a shot.
3.- If you are working with live stats, if there was a feeling during the game that an individual should have been credited with another rebound, see if that will help. With the eBA System of Post Game Video Analysis, you'll have not this problem.
4.- Go back and decide whether another dead-ball rebound should be added.
5.- If the feeling is that the error is in the individual or team rebounds but there is no idea about which one or about which player, consider adjusting the team rebounds.
These suggestions are good if you are working with live stats and also can be used if there are too many rebounds.

We Got Ourselves A Game !
Here's the thing that makes life so interesting. ´
The theory of evolution claims that only the strong shall survive. Maybe so...maybe so...
But the theory of competition says just because their the strong doesn't mean they cant get their ass's kicked. Thats right.
See what every long shot, come from behind underdog will tell you is this.
The other guy may in fact be the favorite, the odds maybe stacked against you, fair enough.
But what the odds don't know is this isn't a math test. This is a completely different kind of test.
One where PASSION has a funny way of trumping logic.
So before you step up to the starting line, before the whistle blows, and the clock starts ticking.
Just remember out here the results don't always add up.
No matter what the stats may say, and the experts may think, and the commentators may have predicted, when the race is on all bets are off.
Don't be surprised if someone decides to flip the script and take a pass on yelling uncle. And then suddenly as the old saying goes, WE GOT OURSELVES A GAME !

Rotations for the Mix & Match-Up Zone Defense!
TRAINING VIDEO with Keno Davis
with Keno Davis,
Central Michigan University Head Coach;
MAC Coach of the Year (2015);
Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award (2015);
former Providence College and Drake University Head Coach;
In 2008, was named the MVC, AP, Sporting News,
Basketball Times National Coach of the Year
and also won the Henry Iba Award
( Para la Versión en Español: Ver a Continuación del Vídeo! )
About this Video:
Davis begins each session on the whiteboard and explains the building blocks of the match-up zone through X's and O's before demonstrating those concepts with his team on the court. We'll learn the set up of the defense and see Davis explain why he puts his personnel into certain spots within the zone. While this defense may look like a 3-2 zone, it's more like a shifting 1-2-2 defense that helps your team protect the basket and be in good rebounding position on shots.
Next, Davis breaks down the rules for perimeter and post players that make driving into the paint difficult and force opponents to settle for tough outside shots. He covers rotations on passes and what to do when your opponent skips the ball or uses ball screens to try and beat the zone.
con Keno Davis,
Entrenador Principal de la Universidad Central de Michigan;
Entrenador del Año de MAC (2015);
Premio Skip Prosser como Hombre del Año (2015);
ex-Entrenador Principal de Providence College y Drake University;

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About the Player Consistency Measure & Statistics Affecting Winning Percentage
"... Between game analysts I hear a lot of talk about a player's consistency being important. But I think that it may almost be as important to know what you'll get from a player night in and night out as to actually get production.
Don't you think that it would be better to have a player who gets a solid 12 pts 7 rebounds every night, than to have someone who you never know if he'll get 17-11 or 7-3 each night, simply because you can count on that production, and plan around it ?
Is there a statistic in the Basketball Statistics Analysis System that measures consistency of players? ..."
My answer is a question.... consistency at doing what ?
In general anything that makes the game more random benefits the weaker team and anything that makes the contest less subject to random factors benefits the stronger team.
We said in the still concluded eBA Basketball Statistics Annual Clinic's live chat that this is why, all else being equal, a slower pace benefits the weaker team and fewer possessions increases the impact of random events.
To measure the player's consistency you can use a linear weights rating system per 48 minutes game-by-game. And then apply standard deviation for the stat categories of interest which would probably be the source of interesting results.

Basketball Statistics Tracking Referred Questions:
A Loose Ball and Pushed by Own Teammate and the Efficiency in Different Possession Start
"... Loose ball and Team B player gets the ball and turns very quickly to shoot at the basket, but when he goes up for the shot he is pushed by another Team B player in the loose ball struggle yet.
The official blew the whistle and then realized that it was his own teammate that had contact with him.
Which is the rule of this situation and, specially the statistician rule according to the eBA Basketball Statistics System ? ..."
From the eBA System: About the Efficiency in Different Possession Start Cases
Here I post some comments on the results included in this post: Efficiency in Different Possession Start Cases.
The complete analysis is included in my exposition about "Possessions" in the eBA ONLINE Clinics:
~ The manner your opponent scores (2p, 3p or FT) does not have a major effect upon your efficiency;
~ Most teams performs better when the possession starts with a defensive rebound after an opponent missed 2p FG;
~ It's easier to put back the ball when an offensive rebound follows a 2 point shot than after a 3-pointer;
~ Good defense makes better team's offense by approximately 5% and good offense improves defense in the same way;
~ A steal is a great offensive tool, more than an offensive rebound;
~ The high efficiency in regards to steals is reasonable because a steal leads to a fast break which is one the most efficient offensive opportunities as well as an offensive rebound;
~ The biggest difference between NBA and European results is efficiency after non-steal turnovers probably because in the NBA an steal is always credited if the ball stays live, which is not always the case in European stats: the eBA Basketball Statistics System register the steals according to the NBA conception;
~ It is harder to take an offensive rebound after a 3p missed than after a 2p missed;
~ One factor that makes bigger the average efficiency after Free Throws is that, because of the team foul penalty, there are more Free Throws near the end of a quarter;
~ The penalty situation also helps to increase efficiency: the net result is a higher average for Free Throws cases than it should be.
eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking=
In an inadvertent whistle situation like this, the official must determine where the ball was at the time of the whistle:
1) the ball is still in the shooter's hands: ball becomes dead immediately, no goal can be scored, and team B gets the ball back. No statistical register, out of the play-by-play story.
2) the ball was in the air: the goal counts if it goes, and the games goes with a jump ball or the Alternating Possession arrow, its depends by the league.
3) if the ball had been secured on a rebound already: that team receives the ball for a throw-in.
See in our forums the 'loose balls tracking' topics and the exposition "Basketball Possessions Tracking & Analysis" at eBA SYSTEM.

Half Court Drill to Improve Basketball Offense by Doug Bruno!
( Para la Versión en Español: Ver a Continuación del Vídeo! )
with Doug Bruno,
DePaul University Head Women's Coach;
over 650 career wins;
Conference USA's Coach of the Decade;
has guided DePaul to 16 straight
NCAA Tournament appearances (2003-18);
USA Women's National Team Assistant Coach (2010-16);
winning Gold Medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics;

led both teams to a Gold Medal at the FIBA World Championships;
only coach to be named USA Basketball's
Developmental Coach of the Year twice;
past President of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
• About this New Training Video
Coach Bruno uses one of his favorite offensive drills to demonstrate how his philosophy works. Starting with simple triple threat situation, he shows how to use a shot fake and attack an open gap. He builds onto this by adding crossover footwork and executing a change of direction move.
While developing a guard in the open court, Bruno turns his attention to the other part of offense: players without the ball. He teaches how to get open using a V-cut and use a backdoor cut for an open layup. As he lays his foundation, he also progressively builds the 1-4 offensive system with scoring options off of a hand off, fake hand off, square up and attack, and split/slip option.
Coach Bruno's offensive philosophy, through detailed player individual development, is one that every coach, at any level, will appreciate and find applicable to use with their team in the seasons ahead!
con Doug Bruno,
Entrenador del DePaul University Baloncesto Femenino;
más de 650 victorias en su carrera;
El Entrenador de la Década de la Conferencia de EE. UU.;
ha guiado a DePaul a 16 apariciones consecutivas del Torneo NCAA (2003-18);
Entrenador Asistente del Equipo Nacional Femenino de EE. UU.
ganando medallas de oro en los Juegos Olímpicos de 2012 y 2016;
ambos equipos obtuvieron una medalla de oro en el Campeonatos Mundiales de FIBA;
de USA Basketball dos veces;

What would you spend today...

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About the Fastbreak Points Per 48 Minutes and the Four Factors
"... Does the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System tracks team fastbreak points game by game and current season average ?
May be the actual basketball game is allowing quick players more access to the lane because of a more rigorous and frequent handchecking calls ?
May be that scoring and FG shots and possessions are down ? ..."
Certainly, the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System tracks team fast-break points game by game and current season average. Some numbers about our total season data:
• Officials are currently calling the games nearer, that means more non-shooting fouls. So, teams are receiving added time per possession ascribable to the shot clock getting reset more frequently.
• Scoring and Field Goals shots and possessions are going down and average duration of possession in game clock time is raising: therefore putting all together we can conclude that the pace has decelerated a little.
• Using our possessions formula - see eBA Encyclopedia - and team data from our archives, the average duration of possession reveal us a possession use in a slower pace: moved from 15.83 seconds to 15.88 seconds.
• And finally, fast-break frequency and points made from stayed the same, personal fouls raises 0.57%, turnovers moves lower 0.6%, steals moves lower 4.6%, blocked shots moves lower 3.4%, assists moves lower 3.2%, total rebounds moves lower 2.2%, shooting percentages are raising but field goal attempts moves lower 0.3% and 3 points attempts raises 1.5%.
In this topic we can find a help in understanding the Dean Oliver's Four Factors.
Essentially, the four factors are the building blocks to the efficiency formula.
Efficiency data gives you an idea of the quality of a team’s offense or defense, but the four factors tell you why a team is good or bad when they have or don’t have the ball.
Here’s a breakdown of how each statistic on this concept is calculated…
Effective field goal percentage is like regular field goal percentage except that it gives 50% more credit for made three-pointers.
eFG% = (.5*3FGM + FGM) / FGA
Turnover percentage is a pace-independent measure of ball security.
TO% = TO / Possessions
Offensive rebounding percentage is a measure of the possible rebounds that are gathered by the offense.
OR% = OR / (OR + DRopp)
Keep in mind that rebounding percentage is computed from box score data which does not contain team rebounds. Therefore, the figures shown here may differ slightly from calculations made on the rebounding totals provided by a team.
Finally, free throw rate captures a team’s ability to score from the line.
FTRateoff = FTM / FGA
FTRatedef = FTA / FGA
Defensive FTRate uses FTA in the numerator since the defense has little control on the percentage of free throw attempts made by the opposition.
The four factors concept is based on the research from Dean Oliver, author of the book and eBook Basketball on Paper: Rules and Tools for Performance Analysis, and you can read Dean’s more detailed explanation of the four factors in the exposition by Prof. Roberto Azar from eBA-Stats about "Basketball Formulas Revision" in eBA ONLINE CLINICS....."

Basketball Statistics Tracking Referred Questions:
A Basketball Technical Foul to an Injured Player
"... A16 does is injured and does not play in the game but while sitting on the bench during the game shouts at the referee and receives a technical foul. How we register this play ? Turnover ? Game Played ?
Which is the rule of this situation and, specially the statistician rule according to the eBA Basketball Statistics System ? ..."
From the Basketball Rules:
In basketball, a technical foul (also informally known as a "T" or a "Tech") is any infraction of the rules penalized as a foul which does not involve physical contact during the course of play between opposing players on the court, or is a foul by a non-player. The most common technical foul is for unsportsmanlike conduct. Technical fouls can be assessed against players, bench personnel, the entire team (often called a bench technical), or even the crowd. These fouls, and their penalties, are more serious than a personal foul, but not necessarily as serious as a flagrant foul (an ejectable offense in leagues below the NBA, and potentially so in the NBA).
Technical fouls are handled slightly differently under international rules than under the rules used by the various competitions in the United States. First, illegal contact between players on the court is always a personal foul under international rules, whereas in the USA, such contact is, with some exceptions, a technical foul when the game clock is not running and/or when the ball is dead. Second, in FIBA play, players foul out after five total fouls, technical and personal combined.
The latter rule is similar to that in college, high school, and middle school basketball in the United States. However, in the NBA and WNBA, players are allowed six personal fouls before being disqualified, and technical fouls assessed against them do not count toward this total. However, unsportsmanlike technicals in the NBA carry a fine, its severity depending on the number of technicals the player has already obtained, and players are suspended for varying amounts of time after accumulating fifteen technicals in the regular season or seven in the playoffs.
In most American competitions, ejection of the offender, be he player, coach, or otherwise, is the penalty for being assessed two technical fouls in a game, if charged directly to him (some technicals committed by a player are charged to the team only). In addition, any single flagrant technical foul, or a disqualifying foul in FIBA, incurs ejection. FIBA rules do not provide for ejection for any number of non-flagrant technicals against a player; however, two technicals on a coach or a third technical on the bench results in his ejection.

5 vs 3 Drill for Transition Defense by Greg McDermott!
( Para la Versión en Español: Ver a Continuación del Vídeo! )
with Greg McDermott,
Creighton University Head Coach;2013 MVC Regular Season and Tournament Champions,
3x MVC Tournament Champions;
led team to a school record 29 wins in 2012.
• About this New Training Video
Coach McDermott is a strong believer in taking easy opportunities in transition away from the opposing team. He shares a couple of transition defense drills that he uses to ensure that his team doesn't give up easy baskets. These drills work on stopping the ball, loading up to the ball side, communicating, and making sure the defense coming from behind flows to the weak side. These drills always end with the defense converting to offense and coming back trying to score.
• 5-on-3 Transition Defense - Communication is key in this drill. McDermott challenges the offense to get a shot off quickly by using a 12 second shot clock.
• 5-on-4 Transition Defense - This simulates teams that don't send their 1 and 2 to the boards. The defense focuses on double-teaming or pinching out during the box out.
• Circle Transition - A great drill for causing match-up issues for the defense. The unpredictable nature of this drill makes communication and purpose of action key.
One huge emphasis that McDermott stresses with all of his drills is they must be game-like. For transition defense, disadvantage drills are useful, but simply going with the disadvantage number isn't game-like. McDermott likes to limit the number of players, but then quickly add them so they eventually match-up evenly.
3x Campeones de torneo de MVC;

About this Video:
The drills in this training video emphasize "discouraging the shot, but playing the drive" through positioning, closing out with high hands, building walls, closing gaps and jumping to the ball.
After building the basics, Mack breaks down post defense from initial positioning on the floor to positioning after the offensive catch in the post. We'll see his wall up technique for post defense that will create "the toughest 3-foot shot to make."
Bringing all of the basic defensive concepts and rules together, Mack demonstrates his 3-out, 1-in (unguarded post) drill, his 3-on-3 identity drill and 3-out 1-in identity drill (4-on-4 with a post) to train the players in a game-like tempo.
Coach Mack teaches the defensive basics using individual and team drills that will:
Create extreme ball pressure
Keep the ball out of the middle of the court
Force the offense to take contested jump shots "away from the box"v
Develop excellent help defense and improve communication on defense

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
Reflections about Statistics Lies, Uses and Misuses of Statistical Graphics
At the last weekly meeting of the concluded eBA Basketball Statistics Tracking Annual Clinic we were discussing the topic of the statistics lies which was initiated by the exposition "Statistics & Statisticians" at eBA ONLINE.
Here is the opinion of Paul H. Kvam and Joel Sokol from their work "Teaching Statistics with Sports Examples":
Statistical lies are most frequently committed in graphical form, where the eyes can be more easily deceived by spurious trends suggested in a picture. A common abuse is manipulating scales on charts and graphs by truncating, censoring or transforming the axis values.
The next figure shows two different charts showing an increase in average attendance at NCAA Women's Soccer games between 1998 and 2003. The first (blue)chart is the default Microsoft Excel chart; many statistical software packages, in fact, will restrict both axes to a small set of values that contains the data, which helps the reader focus on chart differences more clearly. However, it also removes the scale of difference from the picture, which has potential to mislead readers who pay little attention to the axis labels.
Two different charts showing average attendance
at NCAA Women's Soccer (season) matches
The reader's sense of proportion can be manipulated further with image-based charts, which are standard in sports publications. As an example, the figure below graphs the season wins for the New England Patriots using clip-art in place of vertical bars.
Regular season wins for the New England Patriots, 2002-2003
While the height of the football icons corresponds to the information the graph is meant to communicate, the size of the footballs does not; the Patriots improved 56% in wins between 2002 and 2003, but the increase in area of the football icons is over 140%.

If you are performing the analysis by means of video, and you are not sure about those "bench indications". you have no alternative and must register the missed free-throw.
If you were present at this game, and you heard or saw clearly the coach's indications, you may use the "Team Player" option to register the missed throw, registering this action in the "play-by-play" report.

eBA Basketball Statistics Tracking:
If B1 prevents A1 from releasing the ball, it's a held ball, with the statistical record according the alternating possession rule.
If A1 chooses not to release the ball, it's traveling, recording a forced turnover against A1 and a forced steal in favour to B1, the player deflecting, or team player, depending upon the situation.
"... The 8 / 10 seconds time limit rule violation is a PERSONAL or TEAM turnover ? FORCED or
UNFORCED ?
By the way, all the basketball leagues have this rule ? Any difference ? ..."
eBA Basketball Statistics Tracking:
The 8/10 seconds backcourt violation is generally a TEAM TURNOVER, being FORCED or UNFORCED depending upon the opponent's action: if it is as result of an all or half court press defense (FORCED) or a defender's error (UNFORCED).
"... To whom are credited the points scored in the wrong basket ?
To any player ? To the opponent captain ? And what the stats rule ? Turnover ? ..."
Points scored in the wrong basket are never credited to a player, but are credited to the team in a footnote. Points awarded for basket interference or goaltending by the defense are credited to the shooter. When a live ball goes in the basket, the last player who touched the ball causes it to go there ( from the Instructions & Rules Coverage - Scoring 9. ).

• About this New Training Video
Improving 3-Point Shooting
Coach Young discusses the three points of emphasis that his program reinforces to develop great 3-point shooters: recruit great shooters, shot selection, and repetition. He breaks down each part and discusses other things such as shooting off of receiving a bad pass vs. shooting off of a good pass and how to control shot selection. In a typical Coach Young practice, the team spends a minimum of 30 minutes each day on shooting, working mostly on catch-and-shoot situations.
Shooting Drills
Young breaks down shooting into individual and team drills. Each drill has an element of time and score for a player to reach or to compete against and ends with a consequence to add a level of competitiveness. You'll get five individual shooting drills and four team shooting drills.
Individual Drills:
Five Minute Threes
Two Minute Three Minute and Four Minute

Ejercicios individuales:
Cinco minutos de lanzamientos de 3 puntos
Dos minutos, Tres minutos y Cuatro minutos
Lanzamiento de tres minutos

Lanzamiento de veinte minutos
Ejercicios de equipo:
