About the Steals Concept and Statistical Tracking
and Basketball Actuality News Video in our Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About the Steals Concept and Statistical Tracking

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
In basketball, a steal occurs when a defensive player legally gains control of the ball from an offensive player. This can be done by deflecting and controlling, catching, or batting (to a teammate) a pass or dribble of an offensive player.

A steal may happen while the offensive player is dribbling, holding the ball, or by intercepting a pass. The defender must not touch the offensive player's hands or otherwise a foul is called.
Stealing the ball requires concentration, good anticipation, speed and fast reflexes and good hustle, all common traits of a good defender. However, like blocked shots, steals aren't always a perfect gauge of a player's defensive abilities.

An unsuccessful steal can result in the defender being out of position and unable to recover in time. Therefore, a steal is a gamble. And a steal usually leads to a fast break, the most exciting play in the sport.

If an offensive player loses possession of the basketball due to a steal, he is recorded as making a turnover and the defender is recorded with a steal, forced or unforced depending upon the play development.

About the Basketball Steals Concept and Statistical Tracking
Photograph: Zimbio.com

The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System records, in addition to the traditional stats, the points made from the forced and unforced steals done during the game. This number is not always similar, as people usually thinks, to the opponent's points off turnovers.

There is no necessarily prototypical position from which a player may get many steals from. While smaller, quicker guards tend to accumulate the most steals, there are many exceptions. For example, forward Rick Barry led the NBA in steals in 1974-75, and for many years center Hakeem Olajuwon lead his team in the category, consistently ranking among the league's leaders.

Therefore, the eBA System records the area and the whole situation where the steal occurred.

Steals were first recorded in the NBA's 1973-74 season. Kendall Gill ( on December 26, 1976 ) and Larry Kenon ( on April 3, 1999 ) are tied for most steals in a regular season NBA game with eleven.
The most steals in an NBA season is 301 by Alvin Robertson in 1985-86.

About the Bench Scoring Percentage - Value & Analysis
in our Basketball Stats Tracking Referred Questions

Basketball Statistics Tracking Referred Questions:
About the Bench Scoring Percentage - Value & Analysis

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions
"... How to measure the influence over the 'Bench Points Percentage', in the case of a season starter which in any o some games, by some reason of injury or coach decision, come from the bench and plays nearly its minutes played average ? ..."

A relevant contribution of the eBA System is to take the bench points of our team AND from the opponents not only as a Stats quantity, but as a center part of a game basketball analysis.

You can see it's analysis and discussion of the Bench Points Percentage Stats at the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis area, which includes, among others, the following aspects:

Bench Scoring=
• game's total,
• by quarter,
• at each quarter by separate,
• at game' last five minutes,
• shooting averages,

Miami basketball player Reggie Johnson, injured on center, sits on the bench talking to teammates DeQuan Jones, right, and Erik Swoope during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game against Florida State in Coral Gables, Fla.

Photograph: HurricaneSports.com

• changes quantity by game,
• at home;
• on the road,
• opening the game,
• from the bench,
• according to the plus minus, etc.
from our team and from the opponents teams all over the season and each aspect in relation to all other (f.ex. opening the gama on the road or at home, by quarters, etc).

Commentary:
The Bench Scoring Stat are more relevant at the college level.

Most players who goes on to the NBA may scores 20 points a game at least once a season.

Nevertheless, many a winning college team gets exposed in the NCAA for its lack of depth at their bench.

See in our forums the 'bench scoring percentage' topics and the exposition "Basketball Time Played Statistical Analysis" at eBA ONLINE.

All the terms in this post are widely explained at The eBA Basketball Encyclopedia.

2015 Big-12 Coach of the Year;
2015 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year;
over 800 career wins (One of only ten coaches ever

C-USA Coach of the Decade
& 3x Coach of the Year (1998- 2000);
has led his teams to 9 Sweet Sixteen appearances,
4 Elite Eight appearances,
and 2 Final Four appearances

• About this New (12/29/2018) Training Video
Before adding any actions, first you must come to understand the 5-out motion offense and be able to teach your players how to properly space, cut, and fill within it. Huggins demonstrates in this training video how to teach athletes proper spacing along with how to utilize the floor to creating ideal scoring opportunities.

Next, Huggins installs some of his favorite motion offense strategies. We'll see how players can use a traditional pass and cut action into a screen away to put the offense into position to curl to the basket or slip the screen if overplayed. With a flex cut, Coach Huggins uses a ball reversal and screen away to create backside action as the ball is reversed. Before filling out, players look to step off the lane line and set the flex screen, creating an open layup concept.

Zone Offenses & Set Plays for Attacking Any Zone Defense TRAINING VIDEO with Tod Kowalczyk
Ataque contra Zona & Ejercicios Contra Zona VÍDEO ENTRENAMIENTO con Tod Kowalczyk

Basketball Training Videos

Zone Offenses & Set Plays for Attacking Any Zone Defense
TRAINING VIDEO with Tod Kowalczyk

with Tod Kowalczyk,
University of Toledo Head Coach;
2014 MAC regular season champions,
led Toledo to a school-record 27 wins in 2014.

( Para la Versión en Español: Ver a Continuación del Vídeo! )

About this Video:
This training video addresses zone offense. Coach Kowalczyk believes that it is essential to "attack" the zone instead of settling. Some key concepts that he covers in the demonstration are always finding a way to get the ball to the high post, not settling for jump shots and using ball screens to create opportunities for your team.

There are three different ways to play offense: Continuity, motion, or set plays. Coach Kowalczyk runs all three kinds against zone defenses.

• "White" Zone Offense - A continuity offense with four different scoring actions. Discover how post players can screen a zone and look to roll for scoring opportunities around the rim and in the paint.
• Zone Attack - A '4-Out 1-In' motion set up. As the ball moves, perimeter players must use effective cuts as your post player draws on high post touches creating numerous scoring opportunities against any zone defense.
• Set Plays versus a zone - Coach Kowalczyk provides five different set plays against a zone. He demonstrates how to blend your set plays into your zone motion offense.

Ataque contra Defensa en Zona
y Jugadas de Atacar contra Cualquier Zona

VÍDEO ENTRENAMIENTO con Tod Kowalczyk

con Tod Kowalczyk ,
Entrenador Principal de la Universidad de Toledo;

A Basketball Reflection about Preventing Points from and Scoring More Points
and Basketball Actuality News Video in our Weekly Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
A Basketball Reflection about Preventing Points from and Scoring More Points

Basketball Statistics Analysis Referred Concepts
I just explained in one of my last expositions in eBA CLINICS ONLINE that...
"... as far as you analyze one's basketball team defense, in addition to all the formulas we studied at the eBA Basketball Statistics Clinic, the principal question any statistician would have to ask is:
what does the individual player do to prevent points from being scored ? and ...
what does he do to enable his team to score more points than the other team ? ..."

We can read at Detroit Free Press
"... Teams that play faster squeeze more possessions into their 48 minutes, giving them more opportunities to score. But they give their opponents just as many opportunities to score. ..."

"... Playing more possessions – and thus, both scoring and allowing more points – has no real affect on the actual quality of a team’s offense and defense. ..."

"... So, although advanced statistics reveal that Phoenix’s defense was probably better than the credit it received then, they say the opposite about the current Pistons’ defense, which ranked 14th in points allowed per game and 22nd in defensive rating last year. ..."

"... Yes, offensive rating and points per game – or defensive rating and points allowed per game – usually go hand-in-hand. But, often enough, points per game and points allowed per game are misleading. ..."

Brooklyn Nets' Deron Williams, right, fouls the jersey of Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant in the second half of an NBA basketball game in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012. The Lakers won 95-90 with D'Antoni's debut. Photograph by Jae C. Hong, Associated Press

Steals and defensive rebounds are distinctly important in that context, since each takes a possession away from the opponent.

Fouls are important, since a good batch of the time they directly lead to the opponent getting free throws.

Blocked shots, while interesting for the fans, is of borderline value, since it only decreases the other teams FG%, and does not assure a change of possession.

A + / - chart, indicating the margin of points the teams scores in relation to their opponent when a player is on the court, would also be useful, since it allows us to compare individual players to their teammates and to other players around the league.

Getting steals and creating turnovers with a trapping, opportunist defense, getting a lot of deflections and a lot of loose balls, means to annul the opponent transition game, and shows full and continue activity of the defender players.

Also the basketball weight trainers understand that basketball training or basketball weight training must be designed to optimally elevate the vertical jump, speed, and stamina on the court.

This means more blocked shots, steals and successful fast breaks which will translate to more team wins !

About the Basketball Stats Box Score Balance Errors
in our Basketball Stats Tracking Referred Questions & Basketball Statistics Video Case Study

Basketball Statistics Tracking Referred Questions:
About the Basketball Statistics Box Score

Basketball Tracking Stats Referred Questions
"... We know that a properly completed box score should balance.

The sum of the total number of individual, team and dead-ball rebounds for both teams should equal the total number of missed shots ( field and free ) for both teams.

What the statistician must do if the box score does not balance and the mistake cannot be found ? ..."

A properly completed box score should be balanced. To make this determination, the statistician should add the total number of individual, team and dead-ball rebounds for both teams. This number should equal the total number of missed shots ( field and free ) for both teams.

What the statistician must do if the box score does not balance and the mistake cannot be found ?

A better balance can be achieved if rebounds are kept according to whether they are 'offensive' or 'defensive' rebounds.
This must include both team and dead-ball rebounds. In this case, the sum of Team A's offensive rebounds and Team B's defensive rebounds must equal the total number of missed shots by Team A. Also, the sum of Team B's offensive rebounds and Team A's defensive rebounds must equal the number of missed shots by Team B.

Neither check guarantees that there are no mistakes, but they do indicate that mistakes are unlikely. If the box score does
not balance and the mistake cannot be found, the eBA System propose the following steps which may help:

There is only one man who has been with the NBA since it’s inception. There is only one man who wrote the story for the Inquirer the night Wilt scored 100 points. And there is only one man who gave us stats such as the Blocked Shot and the Triple Double. His name is Harvey Pollack, and the 90-year stat guru still has a small office at the Wells Fargo Center, where he serves as director of statistical information for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Photograph: Midwest Sports Fans

There is only one man who has been with the NBA since it’s inception. There is only one man who wrote the story for the Inquirer the night Wilt scored 100 points. 1.- Check the dead-ball rebounds. Look at the number of two-shot fouls where the first FTA was missed.

2.- Check the team rebounds. Think about whether either team was awarded the ball for a throw-in when the ball went out of bounds after a shot.

3.- If you are working with live stats, if there was a feeling during the game that an individual should have been credited with another rebound, see if that will help. With the eBA System of Post Game Video Analysis, you'll have not this problem.

4.- Go back and decide whether another dead-ball rebound should be added.

5.- If the feeling is that the error is in the individual or team rebounds but there is no idea about which one or about which player, consider adjusting the team rebounds.

These suggestions are good if you are working with live stats and also can be used if there are too many rebounds.
