The eBA Basketball Magazine:
The NBA has put in new guidelines this season to combat flopping:
To watch film and sanction floppers after the fact !

The eBA Basketball Magazine
The NBA has put in new guidelines this season to combat flopping which consists essentially in giving the league office the possibility to watch film and sanction floppers after the fact with a progessive scale of fines.

This is similar to the way they have been progressively punishing players who accumulate flagrant or technical fouls throughout the regular season.

Since deciding in a split second whether a play was a block or charge is probably the toughest thing for referees to whistle, I feel that sorting out flops from charges will be no easier, creating a somewhat impossible mission for the NBA refs.
Judging flops after the fact poses the question of why don't they scrutinise ALL errors by the officials the same way. Of course this would be impossible and would create more problems than solutions so in general we will continue to accept that refs make mistakes and that in the course of a game they usually even out... except for flopping calls and injury-causing flagrant fouls.

Why set flopping apart? Because it's cheating say the decision-makers at the league office. The problem is, that for years now, referees would rarely call a charge UNLESS the defender fell down backwards to make sure everyone saw it.

Honestly, how many charges do you remember seeing being called when the defender DID NOT fall down? Not many! You often hear players and refs say" stand your ground and be a man and absorb the contact" but rarely is a whistle blown in this case.

Now to be honest and fair and avoid flopping the refs are going to have to make those calls while the fans will be screaming "let em play ref!".

I agree that players acting like they got shot by a bazooka after a small contact is a pain in the butt and cheating but I think it's going to be very complicated to apply fair judgement.

The cutting edge will be when a player excessively exagerates after a small bump with the sole objective of tricking a ref. I am not too favorable to the idea off adding even more situations where refs can use instant replay because what we have now already slows the games down considerably.

Seeking perfection in the tough business of refereeing is an almost impossible task. Going back to the block-charge dilemma, I feel that 90% of the time the foul is a block on the defender who arrives late or is still moving when the shooter leaves the ground and this is systematically confirmed with the slow motion replay afterwards.

If everyone accepted this fact then less defenders would try to draw iffy charges, less dangerous and ugly pileups would occur in the paint and the offence would be at a real advantage which would produce more high-scoring and spectacular games!

I feel that watching help defenders trying to block a shot is more exciting and less dangerous than watching defenders try to draw a charge.

A similarly complicated call that is omnipresent in the modern game is trying to decide whether there was a moving screen or whether the defender was trying to bulldoze through a well-set pick.

For me these are more fifty-fifty situations with equal amounts of guilt for both parties concerned so just imagine what would happen if the league decided to watch film and correct all THOSE complicated situations after the fact!

To put things simply, I am in favor of any rule changes that would speed up the games, reduce dangerous contact and injury producing situations and increase scoring. What do you think?

Tip-Off: How the 1984 NBA Draft
Changed Basketball Forever
by Filip Bondy

"... In the 1984 NBA draft, the Houston Rockets had the first pick, the Portland Trail Blazers the second, and the Chicago Bulls the third.

League rumor has it that, in the days before the NBA changed the rules of the draft lottery to discourage a team from deliberately losing to get an advantage, the Rockets gave up on the 1983 season from mid-way onwards so as to get hometown favorite Hakeem Olajuwon.

The choice for the Trail Blazers was to select from Sam Bowie, the talented though oft-injured center, and Michael Jordan, then a North Carolina junior with tremendous talent.

Stu Inman, the general manager of the Trail Blazers opted for the conventional league wisdom of big men over guards and selected Bowie. The rest is history. ..."

Harlem Globetrotters and the NBA ~ Historic Strategic Agreement

The Harlem Globetrotters and the NBA reached a strategic partnership agreement by which it, the NBA, will attempt to promote the international recognition level of the Globetrotters, by working hand by hand with them.

Thus, the agreement provides the Globetrotters with the opportunity to participate this year in several acts at the upcoming 'All-Star' Event of the NBA, which will be held next February in Phoenix. The NBA also will also collaborate with the organization and structure of the Globetrotter’s events abroad.

"The Harlem Globetrotters are known around the world and synonymous with family entertainment, we are very pleased to close this collaboration agreement which we know will enhance our efforts to promote constant growth of the sport globally," said very satisfied Heudu Ueberrroth, president of Commercial Collaborations of the NBA.

No less enthusiasm showed Kurt Schneider, CEO of the Globetrotters, following the agreement. "The NBA has always been very good at finding unique ways to marry entertainment and basketball. We believe that our unique view of making basketball along with the wise, expert, and well-established infrastructure of the NBA will conceive an unbeatable combination for both sides," Schneider proudly stated.

Statistician's Digest:
Fran Fraschilla describes his player evaluation methods to David Friedman

From Fran Fraschilla by David Friedman in Yard Barker
Download source here: Exclusive Interview with ESPN's Fran Fraschilla, Part III

"... Particularly in the past 10 years or so, a lot of statistical analysis has come into basketball, a process that started with Bill James' baseball work.
You see this a lot in the NBA right now. I think that there is value to it but I also think that the trained eye is important. Without leading you to an answer, I'd be interested in your perspective on where you fall on the continuum that ranges from old school people who came up in an era that relied entirely on the trained eye and used only the most basic stats to the people on the other end of the continuum like Dave Berri at Wages of Wins who has the attitude that he does not even need to watch games, that the eye is biased and all that he needs to do is crunch numbers in a certain way and then he knows exactly what is happening.
You basically have two extremes: you have an old school guy who says, 'I don't care about the numbers because I know what I am seeing' and then you have Dave Berri who essentially says, 'I don't watch games. All I do is crunch numbers.'
Where do you, Fran Fraschilla, place yourself on that continuum and what do you think of that whole debate? ..."

Basketball News:
The ULEB Competition Model for the Qualification of the National Leagues

EuroLeagueUleb Cup

ULEB General Assembly held in Barcelona has decided to trust in a competition’s model based essentially on the sport principle for the qualification of the national leagues. The new project guarantees the participation of 30 teams from 25 countries in the Euroleague taking as reference the Champions League.

Yesterday 22nd October ULEB has held a General Assembly with one only issue in the agenda: analysis, assessment, and where appropriate, approval of the competition model for Euroleague and Eurocup, submitted in the last General Assembly held in Paris on 23rd September.

ULEB has explained the main advantages of the project and the differences between that model and the one put forward by Euroleague in Berlin, that was not approved definitively, to the 16 attendance leagues – 15 leagues members of ULEB and the Russian Superleague, invited by ULEB. Russian Superleague is going to be accepted as a full member of ULEB once they have submitted the By-Laws of the league for its inscription.

After a depth analysis of the competition, ULEB General Assembly has decided to trust in the development of a system essentially based on three main principles:

1. Qualification based on annual sport results in national or zonal competitions previously recognized by ULEB.
2. Fulfillment of the minimum requirements of entry and participation established by Euroleague (capacity of the arenas, budget, and so on).
3. To set a dynamic ranking of participation that will determine the number of clubs and leagues, according to the sport relevance.

The General Assembly has agreed that this sporting project, that has as a reference the Champions League, gives the maximum relevance to the qualification in national competitions in both European competitions, Euroleague and Eurocup, and it will allow the global growing of the clubs in national leagues and also in Europe.
