A painful part of being a coach - a part that many coaches hate - is preseason tryouts. This is especially true when it becomes clear that cuts are in order to get the team to a manageable number of players. The best way to make these tryouts easier for the players, coaches and parents alike is to have structured, well-planned practices for tryouts.

Middle School Coach Nick Cammarano explains how you can structure a tryout and shares the secrets to developing a successful tryout system that everyone can feel good about participating in. Whether it's demonstrating drills or teaching you what to look for during a tryout session, Coach Cammarano will make sure you are in a position to choose the best team possible.

Cammarano provides an essential list of items that need to be addressed before any tryout. Things like announcing the tryout, ensuring players get their physicals, player and parent meetings and more.

On the court, you will see a series of drills that will help you make confident decisions when you select your team and that can help you distinguish between players who appear to be similar in comparison. Cammarano diagrams every drill that he uses so you are fully prepared to teach your players how to properly execute the drill.

Just as important as the drills themselves, Coach Cammarano provides insights into which skills and traits to look for in your players and why. He runs his "hopefuls" through dribbling, passing, and a variety of shooting drills to evaluate their complete skill set. He uses uses a 3-on-2 / 2-on-1 drill, free throws, suicides and 3-on-3 play to measure player assertiveness and to discover the "athletes" in the tryout. You'll also learn three qualities you can use to assess potential guards and forwards for the team.

Without having a plan, a tryout can be hectic. Effectively organizing your tryouts will save you time and frustration, ensure each player gets an opportunity to showcase their skills, and allow you to build a balanced team that includes all the basketball skills you need to be successful.

In order to develop a consistently successful basketball program, developing players at the middle school level is crucial. Middle school is where basketball players start their careers and a place where good fundamentals are established.

Nick Cammarano has developed an instructional video that will show you how to structure a middle school practice and provide you with a practice blue print that will propel you through the season.

Coach Cammarano demonstrates how he sets up his 90 minute, middle school practice to make his players highly successful. He uses a combination of fundamental and advanced drills to instruct his players through individual skill work, passing, shooting, rebounding, team offense and defense, and special situations.

Each segment of practice is designed to put your players through a rigorous workout and to build their confidence. Cammarano's drills are designed to do more in less time making your practices more efficient.

Coach Cammarano brings all of the skill work together towards the end of his practices by putting his players into various 5-on-0 and 5-on-5 settings. These segments focus on offensive sets, out of bound plays, zone offense and zone defense, and a competitive game to teach his players how to use the skills learned in practice in a game setting.

Great for any middle school or high school coach, this DVD provides essential tools for maximizing your practice time and building a consistently successful basketball program.

Perhaps the most important thing you can do for a young basketball player is to help them develop their individual skills. The ability to shoot, pass and dribble is what makes basketball fun for young players.

In this DVD, you will see a series of offensive skills and drills that will build a foundation for success for your young players. The DVD includes instruction in four skill areas:

• Ball Handling - Incorporate ball handling drills that progress from stationary to moving and from one-ball to two-ball drills. These drills develop the necessary ball handling skills with both hands and help players develop ball control regardless of position.

• Passing - These drills teach the correct fundamentals for both throwing and catching a variety of passes. Players work together on passing into different finishes such as lay ups or shooting. Incorporating these into offensive breakdown drills shows when, how, and why to make the pass in a game.

• Agility - This agility series incorporates reaction and quickness drills with a basketball to create a quicker basketball player on the offensive and defensive ends of the court.

• Shooting - Features more than 10 drills that combine form shooting with movement to prepare your players for game situations. These drills develop pivoting, catching, squaring up, rebounding and converting, finishing moves, and more. Improve your shooting from all areas of the court.

End your workouts with great competitive energy using "Hustle Shots," a competitive shooting game. Court diagrams are provided to help you maximize your court space.

Maximum interaction and covering key skill areas is the emphasis behind structuring an offensive skills workout. Even if you are a first time coach and know little about basketball, this DVD includes easy to understand instructions, key skills and how to look for skills in each player.

Fundamentally strong players are more successful and have more fun. Order now and help your players develop the skills and confidence they need to be successful basketball players.

Pistol Pete's Homework Basketball Four DVD Series with Peter 'Pistol Pete' Maravich
Pistol Pete's
Homework Basketball
Four DVD Series
with Peter "Pistol Pete" Maravich

Peter Maravich (June 22, 1947 – January 5, 1988) was an American basketball player known for his dazzling ballhandling, incredible shooting abilities, and creative passing. He learned at a very young age fundamental basketball and ball handling drills from his father, coach Press Maravich.

He would follow his father and coach throughout the eastern and gulf seaboards as a young man before exploding onto the National Basketball Association (NBA) in his own right.

Nicknamed "Pistol Pete", Maravich starred in college at Louisiana State University (LSU) and for three NBA teams.

Maravich is still the all-time leading NCAA Division I scorer, averaging a staggering 44.2 points per game, without the benefit of a three-point line and despite the fact that when Pete was in his first year of college, the NCAA had separate freshmen and varsity basketball teams and freshmen were not allowed to play on the varsity team.

Years later former LSU head basketball coach Dale Brown charted every college game Maravich played, taking into consideration all shots Pete took. The coach calculated that at the NCAA rule of a three-point line at 19-foot, 9-inches from the rim, Maravich would have averaged thirteen 3-point scores per game, which would have given the player a career average of 57 points per game.

Pistol Pete was an incredible player with extraordinary skills. Many believed he was years ahead of the game - and many of greatest NBA players mention Pistol Pete as one of their idols while they were growing up. That says a lot about his impact on the game.

He is the NCAA all-time leading scorer, NBA All-Star, and the youngest Hall of Fame inductee. He was blessed with great athletic ability, but more importantly he had the drive and determination needed to become one of the best ever!

Pistol Pete Maravich ... the name still rings in the ears of basketball fans across America. College basketball's all-time leading scorer ... NBA All-Star ... and finally the youngest professional inductee into the Basketball Hall of Fame! Now from Pistol Pete comes the most comprehensive instructional series ever produced. No other series can offer the many-faceted combination of instruction, motivation and one-of-a-kind drills. 1987.

It was calculated by LSU coach Dale Brown that Maravich would have averaged 57 points per game with the benefit of a college three-point line.

After graduating from LSU in 1970, Maravich was the third selection in the first round of that year's NBA player draft[2] and made league history when he signed a $1.6 million contract — one of the highest salaries at the time — with the Atlanta Hawks. He wasted little time becoming a prime time player by averaging 23.2 points per game his rookie season and being named to the NBA All-Rookie Team. After spending four seasons in Atlanta, Maravich was traded to the New Orleans Jazz for 8 players, where he peaked as an NBA showman and superstar. He made the All-NBA First Team in 1976 and 1977 and the All-NBA Second Team in 1973 and 1978. He led the NBA in scoring in the 1976-77 with 31.1 points per game.

In ten NBA seasons, Maravich, a five time NBA All-Star, scored 15,948 points in 658 games for a 24.2 points per game average (16th All Time). His NBA single game high, a 68-point explosion before fouling out, came against the New York Knicks on February 25, 1977.

"... Those who have not known Joanne P. McCallie long may wonder why her players and those who know her well call her “Coach P.” The “P” stands for Palombo, her maiden name. McCallie is proud of her Italian heritage, and early in her career found many similarities between herself and coaching legend Jim Valvano. She reasoned that if there could be a “Jimmy V”, why not a “Joanne P?” Therefore, during her years as Joanne Palombo, she became known as “Coach P,” and after her marriage to John McCallie, she decided to keep the “P” as a middle initial. Bob Hurley Coaching High School Basketball 4-Pack
Bob Hurley Coaching
High School Basketball 4-Pack
By Bob Hurley

Robert Matthew "Bob" Hurley, Sr. (born July 3, 1947) is the basketball coach at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. Hurley has amassed 23 state championships and more than 900 wins in 35 years as a coach, creating a national powerhouse despite substandard facilities and financial limitations.

Five of his teams have gone undefeated, including his 2007-08 team. On April 5, 2010, he was announced as the only coach to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame that year and only the third high-school coach in history to be so honored; he was formally inducted on August 13 of that year.

Hurley is the father of Bobby Hurley, a former All-American point guard at Duke, and Dan Hurley, who was hired in April 2010 to coach Wagner College after years of coaching at Newark's Saint Benedict's Preparatory School, also one of the top high school programs in the nation. Dan has since hired Bobby as an assistant at Wagner.

St. Anthony's High School (NJ) Basketball Coach;
2010 Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee;
25x State Parochial Championships
3x USA Today National Championships (1989, 1996, 2008);
2x National Coach of the Year by USA Today (1989, 1996)
A 2010 inductee to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Hulrey has won 25 state titles, three high school national championships, is a two time national coach of the year, and has over 900 career victories. More than 100 athletes have earned Division I basketball scholarships playing for Hurley, and five have been first-round picks in the NBA Draft.

Legendary coach Bob Hurley presents an on-the-court clinic presentation that details both his highly successful Zone Offense and Motion Offense philosophies with various sets and quick hitters.

Zone Offense Philosophy
Force your opponent to guard you from sideline to sideline. Hurley reveals why it is important to dribble more against zone defense than it is to dribble against man-to-man defense. See how to effectively attack zones from behind to give your team easy lay-ups.

Please, Refresh the Page if You Can't watch the Preview and the Videos !

Defeating any Zone Defense
Hurley demonstrates five different offensive sets for attacking any zone defense you may face. He explains how to attack the weak side of a zone to create a simple 2-1 advantage with a ball reversal.

Motion Offense Philosophy
Hurley delivers 10 concepts that make his Motion Offense so successful, including: Fitting motion to your team, "tempo-ing" the game, and moving with a purpose while reading your teammates. He also provides you with an inbounds play he has used for 35 years that is so good he had to run it out of a regular set. Learn audibles and numbered cuts that you can use to keep your offense free-flowing.

Hurley shares two drills he uses to help build your own motion offense. The 11 Pass Drill and the Overplay Drill are based upon the offense making clean passes and using screens to get open as no dribbling is allowed

These are the same offenses that Bob Hurley has used to win three USA Today National Championships. Use Coach Hurley's instruction to add a new wrinkle to your Zone and Motion Offenses.

Turn your team into a defensive powerhouse using the same concepts used by legendary high school coach Bob Hurley.

System Philosophy
Hurley stresses the importance of never staying in the same system for too long and how to adapt to your players' strengths. He shares the three things that he works on every day to build his man-to-man defense.

Pick up the three essential rules that your team must follow in order to be successful against teams that like to push the ball in transition. Learn how to turn the table on a pattern team and make them play in an uncomfortable setting.

Building the Press
Hurley demonstrates four different styles of presses and traps that he utilizes to take the other team out of their comfort zone. He explains what he does in all late game situations, his philosophy behind it and why it has been so successful.

Gimmick Defenses
Within his system, Hurley explains that in every game he uses an "element of surprise" for at least one possession. Hurley tells stories of how he prepares for the opposition's leading scorer and what he does to keep that player from scoring.

Teach the same defensive principles that Bob Hurley has used to win three USA Today National Championships!

In this on-court basketball DVD presentation, Coach Hurley takes you through his philosophy on effectively developing perimeter players. His drills for perimeter players develop 3-point range, the ability to drive to the rim and finish with both hands, fine tune passing skills and create a solid mid-range shot.

Hurley takes demonstrators through 11 multi-faceted drills, most of which work on multiple skills in the same drill. These drills develop shooting, ball handling, passing, rebounding and defense. The drills include:

•  2-on-0 Full Court Warm-up (6 parts)
•  5-3-1 Shooting (includes shooting, ball handling, and individual defense)
•  Curl-Pop-Fade (shooting while reading the defense while coming off a screen)
•  3 Man Shooting (three shot drill off a pick & roll situations)
•  Passing Tag
•  Half Court 3-on-3 (competitive games)
•  Pitino 1-on-1 (conditioning and shooting)
•  Drexel 1-on-1 (individual offense and defense)
•  Dribbling Routine (7 part routine working on a variety of dribbling moves)
•  Steve Nash Shooting Routine (Breaks down the 20-minute workout while adding a couple extra shot moves)
•  Thirty and a half (shooting drill to finish the workout)

Coach Hurley's perimeter player drills emphasize teaching the fundamentals slowly and gradually, building them to game speed. Insert these new ideas, concepts, and drills into your program and start getting more from your perimeter.

About Coach Bob Hurley

Robert Matthew "Bob" Hurley, Sr. (born July 3, 1947) is the basketball coach at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. Hurley has amassed 26 state championships and more than 1000 wins in 39 years as a coach, creating a national powerhouse despite substandard facilities and financial limitations.

On February 2, 2011, Hurley became the 10th coach in high school history to win 1000 games. Five of his teams have gone undefeated, including his 2007-08 team. On April 5, 2010, he was announced as the only coach to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame that year and only the third high-school coach in history to be so honored; he was formally inducted on August 13 of that year.

Hurley is the father of Bobby Hurley, a former All-American point guard at Duke, and Danny Hurley, who was hired in April 2010 to coach Wagner College after years of coaching at Newark's Saint Benedict's Preparatory School, also one of the top high school programs in the nation. Danny has since hired Bobby as an assistant at Wagner.

Hurley's undefeated 1989 team, which featured Jerry Walker, Hurley's son Bobby, Terry Dehere, and Rodrick Rhodes, was ranked first in the nation by USA Today. Three of the players on that team — Bobby Hurley, Dehere and Rhodes — were first round draft choices in the NBA draft. That team won New Jersey's first Tournament of Champions and amassed 50 straight victories in a two-year span. It is generally considered one of the best teams in New Jersey history.

Hurley's 2007-08 squad was also undefeated, finishing with 32 wins and no losses and ranked number one in the U.S. even though no starter is taller than 6'6". The '08 team, with six seniors accepting Division I basketball scholarships, also won Hurley's 10th Tournament of Champions, winning its state tournament games by an average of more than 27 points per game. The team also won St. Anthony's 25th state championship, more than any other school in U.S. history.

Hurley was the coach for 23 of those teams and an assistant coach on the other two. His teams are known for their speed, defensive intensity, and precise ball movement. He is known for his intense calls from the sideline to players during stoppages in play.
