About Underrated or Overrated Individual Statistics in Basketball

Basketball on Paper by Dean Oliver
to the review

Are the individual statistics of good players on bad teams underrated in raw form ?

Are the individual statistics of bad players on good teams overrated in raw form ?

Some reflections to begin the discussion:

1) Most teams without their best player will turn down the averages than with and probably lower than league average with the best players still included, so an adaptation must be overdone it in the team analysis in the cases of best players off.

2) There is team influence on player FG% and the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis performs adaptations either in the score or in the evaluation of the score. But our System takes always in account that the player is utmostly agent or cause of the shots he takes.

3) A player on a bad team may take more hard shots and fewer not hurried ones and vice versa on a good team, so the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis takes all of these shots out and analyze the remaining shooting precision.

Sistema eBA de Analisis de las Estadisticas del Baloncesto

4) Efficiency connected with statistics might become greater on a better team when the defense needs to move outward and defend so many other menaces. However, from another point of view, the percentage of touches might grow worse. When you're encircled by better players, you might get less touches than if you are the exclusive talent on a bad team.

5) And finally, good teammates among the good players will still get some recognition, bad teammates on the court will not gain as many bonus points and look inferior in individual ratings because of their unsatisfactory influence on other teammate shooting.

Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success by Phil Jackson and Hugh Delehanty
Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success
by Phil Jackson
and Hugh Delehanty

MJ vs. KB? Here it is from the man who would know best.

"... Michael was more charismatic and gregarious than Kobe. He loved hanging out with his teammates and security guards, playing cards, smoking cigars, and joking around,

Kobe is different. He was reserved as a teenager, in part because he was younger than the other players and hadn't developed strong social skills in college.

When Kobe first joined the Lakers, he avoided fraternizing with his teammates. But his inclination to keep to himself shifted as he grew older.
Increasingly, Kobe put more energy into getting to know the other players, especially when the team was on the

Michael was a tougher, more intimidating defender. He could break through virtually any screen and shut down almost any player with his intense, laser-focused style of defense," said Jackson, who coached Jordan to six championships and Bryant to five.

Kobe has learned a lot from studying Michael's tricks, and we often used him as our secret weapon on defense when we needed to turn the direction of a game. In general, Kobe tends to rely more heavily on his flexibility and craftiness, but he takes a lot of gambles on defense and sometimes pays the price.

Michael was more likely to break through his attackers with power and strength, while Kobe often tries to finesse his way through mass pileups," Jackson wrote. "Michael was stronger, with bigger shoulders and a sturdier frame. He also had large hands that allowed him to control the ball better and make subtle fakes.

Jordan was also more naturally inclined to let the game come to him and not overplay his hand, whereas Kobe tends to force the action, especially when the game isn't going his way. When his shot is off, Kobe will pound away relentlessly until his luck turns. Michael, on the other hand, would shift his attention to defense or passing or setting screens to help the team win the game.

Brooke expected me to get angry and make her feel protected. Instead I suppressed my rage — as I'd been conditioned to do during childhood by my parents … it left her feeling alone and unsupported. (In the end, after filing a report with the police, Brooke chose not to press charges.)

"The Kobe incident triggered all my unprocessed anger and tainted my perception of him. ... It distorted my view of Kobe throughout the 2003-04 season. No matter what I did to extinguish it, the anger kept smoldering in the background

No question, losing Kobe would be a blow to the organization and to me personally ..."

Basketball Statistics Case Studies

Last Month Case Study Conclusion:

About a Basketball Disqualifying Foul and Points Scored Tracking Case Study

"... The player A4, in the act of shooting a 3 pointer, he releases the ball and the player B6 punches him with closed hand in his face, the ref whistles and simultaneously sounds the game clock buzzer to indicates the end of the game and the ball goes into the basket, the ref ratify the basket and disqualifies B6, informing about all the events to the game officials.

The question is how many additional free throws the player A4 will shot, one or two free throws ?

What is the proper ruling and the correct INDIVIDUAL or COLLECTIVE statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System including the type of the registration ( type of turnover; forced, unforced, individual or collective turnover, good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound; assist made, potential, missed or double assist; etc. ) ..."

Basketball Free Throws Statistics Tracking

Basketball Statistics Philosophy:

A player should not be charged for a shot from the field influenced by the illegal actions of himself, or any teammates or opponents; in the latter case, unless the shot results in a FGM.

eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:

A free throw made (FTM) is credited to a player any time a FTA by that player results in the throw being counted or results in an awarded score of one point.

According to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System when we have a situation of any foul continued by a goal we are speaking about an additional free throw, that's means, the player victim of the flagrant foul will throw a free throw and the game is over ( or goes into an eventual over time ); in this example the player made three points and a possible additional point more.

eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking:

• A4, a field goal made for three points + a received foul + a free throw attempt.

• B6, a Disqualifying foul made.

There is no recording of a turnover , because there is no another possession in this case.
