Bonus Free Throw

Bonus Free Throw:
An extra free throw awarded after the opposing team has exceeded a certain limit or is over the limit. In the NBA, the limit is five personal fouls per period, at FIBA and ULEB the limit is four. After that, a personal foul results in two free throws for the opponent who was fouled. In college basketball, the limit is seven fouls per half, after which the opposing team shoots one-and-one free throws.

Types of fouls include personal, unsporting and contact technical fouls. A player control foul is counted as a team foul for the purpose of reaching the bonus. Unsporting technical fouls charged to anyone on the bench count toward the team foul total and bonus free-throw situations.

Also known as: the penalty.
