Usage Rate

Usage Rate:
A basketball (external link) player’s usage rate - UR - is the percentage of team possessions used by that player when he/she is in the game.

While this is a variant of the %TP formula, these numbers may not work out mathematically when calculating from one to the other because different authors use different estimation methods.

Usage Percentage (available since the 1977-78 season in the NBA anf the formula is:

100 * ( ( FGA + 0.44 * FTA + TOV ) * ( Tm MP / 5 ) ) / ( MP * ( Tm FGA + 0.44 * Tm FTA + Tm TOV ) )
